How can I share the Media Library over a network?

To use the Mind Express 5 Media Library over a network, the file globalsettings.xml has to be edited on every computer that will make use of the network share. This can be done as follows:

  • Navigate to the Mind Express 5 settings folder:
    • on Windows XP: C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersDocumentsMind ExpressSettings.
    • on Windows Vista, 7 and 8: C:UsersPublicDocumentsMind ExpressSettings.
  • Right click on the file globalsettings.xml and select Open with… Notepad.
  • Edit the path of all Media Library subfolders (marked in yellow in the image):
    • By default all paths refer to the location on the local computer (C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersDocumentsMind ExpressMediaLib). E.g.: <Setting key=“DocumentFolder” value=“C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersDocumentsMind ExpressMediaLibDocuments”/>
    • The edited path should refer to the location of the shared Media Library on the network. E.g.: <Setting key=“DocumentFolder” value=“name_of_the_network_computerAllUsersDocumentenMind ExpressMediaLibDocuments”/>
  • Also edit the path of the Media Library cache folder, <Setting key=“ResolversFolder” value=“C:UsersPublicDocumentsMind ExpressResolvers”/>.
  • Repeat this for every computer that will make use of the network share; copying globalsettings.xml to every computer should suffice.

It also needs to be noted that sharing the Media Library on a network means it becomes possible for several persons to try and edit a certain document on the network. This will not work. We recommend you make sure only one person at one time tries to edit a certain document.

Issues:

My function keys no longer respond, how can I sort that out?

The function keys (e.g. F2 for edit mode) may no longer respond if Mind Express is restarted after crashing or being closed improperly. This is due to conflict that arises between the hooks (supporting pieces of software) that have failed to shut down properly with the original instance of Mind Express and the hooks that are launched with the new instance of Mind Express. It can be remedied as follows:

  • Shut down Mind Express
  • Press Ctrl+Alt+Del and end all remaining HMHelp32.exe and HMHelp64.exe processes
  • Restart Mind Express

Alternate ways of doing this are logging off and on to Windows or rebooting the computer.

HMHelp32.exe / HMHelp64.exe error

An error occurred while trying to replace the existing file: DeleteFile failed; code 5. Access denied.
This error indicates that the installer is trying to overwrite a file that is already in use. The error can usually be fixed by closing Mind Express 5 and clicking retry.

If this doesn’t stop the error from appearing, it is usually because of processes that stayed active after a previous instance of Mind Express 5 crashed – in particular the files HMHelp32.exe and HMHelp64.exe (in directory C:Program FilesMind Express 4 or C:Program Files (x86)Mind Express 5). These processes can be shut down manually from the Task Manager. Alternatively, you can simply log off and on again to your Windows account.

How do I deal with Camera add-on performance issues?

If you experience a low frame rate in the camera image preview in Mind Express 5, please take the following into consideration:

  • The size of the preview tile in Mind Express 5 should be bigger than the resolution of the camera image.
  • If the preview tile is smaller than the camera image, Mind Express has to scale down the camera image, which can dramatically lower the performance and frame rate of the camera. If the preview tile is bigger than the camera image, Mind Express will display the camera image in its original size. No upscaling will occur and the performance will not be affected.
  • Once a picture is taken, it will be scaled to optimally fill the tile in which it is shown.

On the Mobi 2, the camera image resolution is set to 640×480. The screen resolution is 1024×768.

How can I extend the demo period?

Please contact Techcess if you want to extend your demo period.

How can I set an image for a cell that plays music/video?

There are three ways of doing this:

  • You can select a symbol for a cell (as you do with any other cell) and tie a song or video to it by using the action Music And Video > Open File.
  • You can also create a dynamic list, add multiple song or video cells to it in the way described above and then add cells to the grid to view and scroll through the dynamic list.
  • The most dynamic way of handling this is by making a folder with music and/or video files and images with corresponding names (e.g. hey_jude.mp3 and hey_jude.jpg), and then adding cells with the action Music And Video > Browse through folder (under Advanced) to the grid. Music files without a corresponding image will be displayed with the standard music note symbol, video files with the standard tripod movie camera symbol.

How can I play mp4 files?

MP4 files are not supported by default by Mind Express 5. You can either choose to convert your mp4 files to a supported file format, or you can do the following:

  • Download K-Lite from this location.
  • Run the setup
  • For the best results, make sure you select “Profile 2: Default (without player)” and “No thanks. I don’t want any of the above”.
  • You should now be able to play mp4 files in Mind Express 5.

How can I make a phone call with the Mobi 2?

In order to be able to make phone call from Mind Express 5 with the Mobi 2, make sure the Mobi 2 option is checked in Tools > Add-ons. If this isn’t the case, check the item and click OK twice to restart Mind Express 5. The Mobi 2 functions will now be installed.

Now you can edit your communication grid and add a cell with the action Mobi 2 > Microphone On and a cell with the action Mobi 2 > Microphone Off. The caregiver can then click on the first cell whenever she wants to say something during a call.

At the end of the call, she can click on the second cell to turn the microphone off again. Alternatively, the action Mobi 2 > Microphone Off can be added to the cell that is used for exiting the call page. Another option is to add the action Mobi 2 > Microphone Off to both the cell Answer and the cell Hang up. This ensures that the microphone is always off by default when starting a phone call.

How can I navigate an interactive voice response (IVR) when making a call with Mind Express 5?

IVR menus cannot actually detect which button you press, but respond to corresponding tone sent when the button is pressed. By creating a telephone keypad page in which each tile plays the corresponding DTMF tone, you can navigate through IVR menus.

How can I link a dynamic list to a specific document?

To link a dynamic list to a specific file, do the following:

  • Go to the dynamic list editor via menu Tools > Dynamic Lists.
  • Create a new list or edit an existing list. The asterisk (*) indicates that the list is a general list. If there’s no asterisk, the list is linked only to the document.
  • Select ‘Location: Current Document’ in the drop-down list.
  • Click ‘OK’. A new list is added, or the existing list is displayed without the asterisk.
  • The dynamic list is now linked solely to the current document and will no longer be available from other documents.

  • You can then restore the user document later or import to another device if necessary by using File > Import > Document.
